Presentazione

  • 9 marzo 2013 — MOB MUSICA, Menomale, Bologna

Vincenzo Scorza cura composizione, performance, live electronics e sound design.

Descrizione originale dell’autore — 17 gennaio 2013

Integrazione autoriale successiva — 11 febbraio 2013

Nexus Inter Animae is a work of live electronics and sound design by Vincenzo Scorza, developed in dialogue with the visual research of Alessandro Scotti.

Its sound explores matter and vibration as connecting elements between microcosm and macrocosm, translating the material objects in Scotti’s images into sound.

Composer’s original description (17 January 2013)

The original Italian author’s text is preserved verbatim in the Italian entry below. Written as a draft for MOB MUSICA, it frames the visual collaboration with Alessandro Scotti through matter, vibration, microcosm and macrocosm, and understands sound as an expression of matter’s ceaseless motion. In a contemporary editorial reply, Scorza was asked to explain the music-making process more concretely: the document is therefore labelled as an original draft, not an attested final programme. [English editorial synopsis of the original Italian, not an original English text.]

Full original artist text — 17 January 2013 (English translation)

The text below is a faithful translation of the complete Italian authorial draft quoted in the Italian-language page. It was sent for MOB MUSICA communication; it is not an independently published English-language statement or necessarily the definitive programme copy.

When Alessandro Scotti proposed an artistic collaboration for a MOB event, I did not yet know what fine thread united his visual research with my artistic imagination. Matter appears fragmented to visual perception, yet both the space it inhabits and matter itself are something plasmatic: magma organised according to rigorous laws. Matter lives through action and reaction, in a continuous exchange of energy, a topological space that generates and contains topological space, the paradox of the fractal boundary. Vibration is the motion that makes matter present, the vital oscillation — from the electron to the galaxies and beyond — proper to every state of matter. Microcosm and macrocosm, divided by theory and analogous in substance, find their lowest common multiple in elementary oscillation. Sound — the propagation of oscillation to the senses — is its primary form of presence. My sonic Nexus will probe the object-matter at the centre of Alessandro Scotti’s images, distilling the aspect that joins the immanent to the transcendent. Silence, like stasis, does not exist. Sound is urgent and necessary to the life of all matter, even the most inert.

The 17 January 2013 editorial response asked the composer to provide a more concrete explanation of the musical process. Accordingly this source is preserved as an author’s draft, not evidence that the final event description was identical. [The Italian original is reproduced verbatim in this record’s Italian text.]

Later artist’s addition — 11 February 2013

On 11 February 2013, Scorza sent the MOB MUSICA organisers a preparatory PDF. It reprises the January description and adds this account of the musical work, translated here from the original Italian:

On 9 March, at Menomale in Via De’ Pepoli, I will give a short live-electronics performance for the Nexus Inter Animae event. The “subjects” of the images produced by Alessandro Scotti will be the protagonists of a sonic story, told through the technique of controlled improvisation, a magnifying lens on the sonic world in which the materials of the photographic compositions move, revealing their inner life. At the same time, a short soundscape — once again using the materials used to compose the images — will accompany the photographic exhibition.

This document describes the planned performance and a soundscape intended to accompany the photographic exhibition. It does not, on its own, establish that both took place exactly as planned.
